Kaieteur Sports- Young Chess wizard Aniyah Couchman emerged winner of the 2025 Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) /Diamond Fire & General Insurance-sponsored National Women’s Chess Championship Qualifiers.
Some 19 stars dazzled during the Swiss-format classic style tournament which ended this past Sunday after a few weekends of stiff competition.
Games were played in control of 90 minutes, with a 5-second increment added to the clock following each move.
Supervised by FIDE Arbiter John Lee and National Arbiter Kim Shing Chong, Couchman shined on Sunday at the David Rose Special School where the competition was hosted, eventually winning the 7 round FIDE-ranked event.
Couchman racked up 5.5 points for her win after losing her only battle against Women’s Master Sasha Shariff.

Reigning Under-16 Girls Champion, WCM Aditi Joshi also ended with 5.5 points following four wins with a trifecta of drawn outcomes, as her final battle with Couchman finished in a stalemate.
Third place went to Shariff who ended with 5 points with girls U12 champ Kataleya Sam, coming in at 4th.
Meanwhile, nine females will be eyeing the 2024 National Women’s Champion and current title holder, WCM Jessica Callender, with the winner being crowned the 2025 National Women’s Chess champion.
