Venezuela’s aggression demands urgent national unity – GTUC

Kaieteur News- The incursion of a Venezuelan naval ship into Guyana’s waters on March 1, 2025, has intensified concerns over the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) on Tuesday condemned this violation and called for immediate national unity in the face of growing threats from neighbouring Venezuela.

In a statement, the GTUC urged President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo to rise above partisan politics and engage all stakeholders for a united national front to defend against this aggression.

“The political division in Guyana is directly eroding public trust, particularly as many feel excluded from the nation’s political and economic decision-making,” GTUC said.

The organization highlighted that Article 13 of the Guyana Constitution mandates citizen participation in decision-making, particularly in matters affecting their well-being, and called on the government to adhere to this principle as the country faces increasing external pressures.

The GTUC also raised concerns about the upcoming Venezuelan election for the Governor of Essequibo on April 27, 2025, and the ongoing risks posed by Venezuela’s military presence along Guyana’s border. They referenced a recent attack on Guyanese soldiers in the Cuyuni area and the secrecy surrounding the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of GDF soldiers.

The GTUC underscored that Venezuela’s actions violate international law, specifically the 1899 Arbitration Award and the 2023 Argyle Agreement. GTUC urged the government to recognize that internal divisions only serve to strengthen President Nicolás Maduro’s position. They emphasized the importance of national unity, stating that “Maduro will not be fooled—he is fully aware of the divisions within Guyana and will exploit them if given the chance.”

In response, the GTUC has presented several recommendations to strengthen Guyana’s defence strategy and foster national cohesion, including the establishment of a permanent body of experts to monitor Guyana’s borders, the creation of reliable communication links between frontier communities and the capital, and the promotion of local investments in hinterland and frontier areas. The GTUC also called for a sustained public information campaign to raise awareness of Guyana’s territorial claims.

“The time to act is now. Unity, not division, is our best defence,” the GTUC concluded, urging the government to prioritize national unity and safeguard Guyana’s sovereignty.
