(Kaieteur News) – A 27-year-old man of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was taken into police custody in relation to an armed robbery at a Vryheid’s Lust business.
Police said the robbery occurred on April 24 around 20:00hrs and was committed on a 27-year-old cashier of Mon Repos, a 28-year-old spray painter of Vryheid’s Lust, and five other customers who were present at the time.
Based on police information, the victims were at the business place when two men arrived on a black XR motorcycle from the northern direction, and entered the premises.
One of the suspects was reportedly armed with a firearm, while the other was armed with a knife. Investigators learned that the suspects allegedly pointed the firearm at the customers, during which the 28-year-old was relieved of a cellular phone and a sum of cash, and the 27-year-old cashier was relieved of cash from the business place.
The suspects then exited the business place and made good their escape.
The police reported that during an effort by persons in the area to follow and intercept them, the armed suspect reportedly discharged rounds, causing damage to two motor vehicles.
“A collision subsequently occurred with the suspects’ motorcycle, causing the men to fall into a nearby drain, after which they escaped on foot, leaving behind the motorcycle and a haversack containing cash,” the report detailed.
Investigators have since recovered two spent shells and the motorcycle was lodged. Further, CCTV footage from the business premises was also retrieved and viewed as part of the investigation.
Later that night between 22:00hrs and 22:19hrs, police ranks said they conducted a search at the home of a 27-year-old man of Plaisance, in relation to the robbery.
In his presence, a search was conducted in a bedroom, and “a suspected firearm was found wrapped in a cloth inside a clothes basket,” the police reported.
The suspect was shown the suspected firearm, and asked if he was a licensed firearm holder to which he stated he was not. The firearm was lodged and he was arrested and taken into custody.
