Kaieteur Sports – The National Under-19 Men’s rugby team embarked on their journey yesterday as they set off for the 2023 Rugby America’s North (RAN) Men’s U19 championship. The tournament is scheduled to take place at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica, starting tomorrow, Wednesday.
A group of twenty-eight member team, consisting of twenty-three players and four officials, left Guyana early on Monday morning for Kingston to participate in this year’s tournament. The team will commence their campaign alongside the host country, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Dakari Martindale will lead the team as their captain, with the experienced Elisha Crawford being the only surviving member from the 2019 Guyana team that participated in the previous RAN championship before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the sporting events.
After being unable to participate in the competition last year due to financial constraints, the team is now fully prepared and eager to compete in this tournament. Serving as the Team Manager for the young ruggers on this trip will be former national rugby player Sherlock Solomon. The team is supported by Coach Larry Adonis, who will assist with their preparation for the tournament.
The complete squad includes: Dakari Martindale as the captain and Nihil Carter as the vice-captain. The other team members are Dion Softley, Vidal Narine, Tashenia Leitch, Gavin McPherson, David Massiah, Anton Bernard, Sylvester Fraser, Elisha Crawford, Melson Moe, Omarion Leitch, Ephrain McLennan, Shaquan Adams, Tion Mars, Daniel Deheart, Samuel Bellang, Tion Luke, Renson Branch, Treville Weeks, and Darian Bentick. The standby players are Cadem Hollingsworth, Samuel Nicholas, and Jamal Johnson.
The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) expressed its sincere gratitude to all the corporate entities that contributed towards the cause; providing the young Green Machine with the opportunity to participate in this year’s tournament.
