Quarterfinals of Hamilton Green Cup postponed due to inclement weather

Kaieteur Sports – The highly anticipated quarterfinal matches of the Hamilton Green Cup have been postponed as threatening weather conditions loom over the region, forcing organisers to reschedule today’s fixtures at the Plaisance Ground.

Tournament coordinator, Lennox Arthur has confirmed that, based on recent weather analyses and forecasts, the decision was made in the interest of player safety and match quality. The quarterfinal clashes have now been moved to April 2, with the venue remaining unchanged.

Despite the minor setback, excitement continues to build around this unique football competition. Yesterday, organisers revealed that following the completion of the quarterfinal stage, the tournament will accelerate into a high-energy finale featuring an eight-team showdown—all in a single night.

Dubbed as “one night, eight matches, one title,” the revised structure will see teams progress immediately into semifinal encounters, before culminating with the grand finale to crown the 2026 champions.

Teams including; West Side Alliance, Zeelugt, Mocha, Mahaica, Order and Discipline, Victoria, Golden Stars, and Plaisance remain in contention for top honours. With over $800,000 in prize money at stake, the eventual champions will walk away with a $500,000 cash prize. Second, third, and fourth-place finishers will earn $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000 respectively, along with medals and trophies recognizing their achievements.

The tournament enjoys strong backing from former Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green, alongside prominent supporters such as Michael Sue, Dr. Linden Dodson, Ronaldo Alphonso, Edmond Veira, and Patrick Barton.

Corporate Guyana has also thrown its weight behind the prestigious nine-a-side Inter-Ward Football tournament. Sponsors including Aurora, G Min Ventures, Busta Soft Drink, ENet, Star Rental, BK International, Correia & Correia, Cummings Electrical Company Ltd, IPA, China Trading, New Thriving Restaurant, Toolsie Persaud Ltd, King’s Liquor Store, Gafoors, Beharry Ready Mix, and Rick’s and Sari Enterprise have all contributed to the event’s success.

With the new quarterfinal date set, the tournament is poised for an electrifying eight-team conclusion on April 2.
