Kaieteur Sports – The importance of swimming was highlighted yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre in Lilliendaal as the ‘Teach Them Young’ Learn to Swim programme commenced. More than two thousand aspiring swimmers, accompanied by their parents/guardians, gathered to witness the opening ceremony of this month-long event.
The ‘Teach Them Young’ Learn to Swim programme serves as a stepping stone towards creating national athletes, as well as promoting overall health and wellness, and instilling valuable life lessons in the youth of Guyana. It is through such investments in sports and youth development that the country’s future can be shaped, ensuring a brighter and healthier tomorrow.
The Director of Sports, Steve Ninvalle, along with Assistant Director Frankie Wilson and other members of the National Sports Commission (NSC), spearheaded the ceremony. The Minister of Culture Youth and Sports (MCY&S), Charles Ramson Jr., also graced the occasion and engaged with the children, emphasizing the significance of physical activities and the importance of acquiring life skills. The Minister even took the time to guide them through warm-up drills, emphasizing their importance in achieving goals and mastering skills.

MCY&S Minister Charles Ramson Jr. engaged with Teach them youth participants during the opening ceremony.
As part of the opening ceremony, national coach Paul Mahaica selected a few participants from the crowd who had previously participated in the inaugural Learn to Swim programme held in April. These brave individuals showcased the four swimming strokes to the audience, providing a demonstration of their progress. By organizing programmes like ‘Teach Them Young,’ the government and sports authorities are actively working towards ensuring that swimming becomes accessible to all Guyanese children. Such initiatives provide a platform for young swimmers to learn, grow, and potentially pursue a career in competitive swimming.
During his opening remarks, Minister Ramson expressed his commitment to investing in sports, ensuring that the youth of the country are provided with the necessary opportunities that previous generations may have missed. He encouraged those in attendance to join the National Sports Academy, which is open to all Guyanese citizens. The Minister also urged parents to invest in their children, highlighting that, the academy is not only for aspiring swimmers but it also covers all twelve core-sports. This initiative, a collaboration between the MCY&S and the NSC, aims to shape the future of the country through nurturing the potential of the youth.
