Village Focus…
Kaieteur News – Today we make a stop at the tranquil village of Lancaster. I don’t know about you, but when visiting the community of Lancaster, located in East Berbice Corentyne, you will immediately notice that there is an eclectic mixture of businesses, that service the residents, making their lives particularly hassle-free when it comes to shopping.
Situated close to Whim Village with just a street separating the two villages, you are sure to find businesses from a private medical lab, to grocery stores, liquor shops, a barbershop, an agriculture spare part shop and much more. In the village itself, located along the public road is the long-standing Govinda Mandir and just opposite that on the other side of the public road, is the Revival Temple, Assembly of God Church.
Residents in the area were extremely friendly when we visited the village. Many took time out from whatever they were doing to speak with us. They stated that for the many years, they have lived in the community, it has been quiet and peaceful with very few issues affecting them other than drainage.
Nigel Lord, who has been living with his uncle John Leitch in the community for quite a while, earns a living by working at the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) Albion Sugar Factory. He mentioned that people in the village “do all kinda work” such as fishing and cutting cane and are also self-employed.
For him, Lancaster is the place he will forever call home, since he does not see himself living anywhere else. He added that the people are really good in their own way and do what they can to make an honest living.
Arjune, well known as “Barber” had a client at his barbershop getting his hair cut and styled. He said that the village is a real melding pot, comprising a mixture of all the different races from various backgrounds. He said too that the people are hardworking in whatever they do to earn a living, “it got a lot of carpenters in this village and lot of people do fishing; this is a quiet place.”
For him, he has been a Barber for quite some time, is married, and has two children which he supports through his ‘barbering skill.’ He said he learnt the skill while at home, practicing on friends and relatives until he felt that he can actually make an honest living out of it.
“I learn this by myself at home; catch them neighbours and so…I do eyebrows and so”
His client said he is one of the best barbers around and that he travelled from Letterkenny to get his hair expertly cut for an affordable cost. Arjune’s Barbershop is located along the public road, just after the Lancaster sign board.
Meanwhile, although Arjune has spoken good things about his community he mentioned that there has always been an issue with drainage and noted that he would like to see the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC)become more actively involved in the community, by providing the basic services for residents to live comfortably. He mentioned that the drains are an issue since they have not been cleaned in quite a while, this adds to the excessive flooding when there is heavy rainfall.
Not far from the barber, resides ShalimAzimulla, 49, a truck driver, who has been living in Lancaster all his life.
“Lancaster is a quiet, easy village, the people are friendly and very hardworking,” he said as he was about to head out to work as a truck driver for the estate. According to him, he has been a truck driver for the past five years and that the job “pays the bills.”
Azimulla stated that among the vibrant group of Lancaster people lives a retired teacher, a retired police officer, fishermen and many more interesting people.
He expressed that while he loves his community if an opportunity arises for betterment elsewhere, he would take it.
“I like the roadside, but I can’t say you can stick to one place, if an opportunity opens, I am open to going…”
Lancaster Village made the news in 2020 when a fire destroyed a huge house, leaving several people homeless, but other than that unfortunate event, the people said bad things rarely occur, it is mostly positive and incident free when it comes to living.
