60th National Schools’ Championship to be launched today
Kaieteur News – The 60th edition of the National Schools Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships will launch today, where the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) will publicly announce their plans for the return of the most anticipated sporting event locally for the first time since 2019.

The five-day championships (November 28 – December 2) will see over 1500 students, athletes and officials converging to represent their respective districts in events at the National Track and Field Centre, the National Aquatic Centre (swimming) and cycling at the National Park.
November 17 – 22, 2019, was the last time the championships were held, while organisers had to pull the plug on the event the following year after the world was battling the adverse effect of COVID-19.
The 59th edition of the Championship saw District 10, Upper Demerara/Kwakwani, winning their fifth consecutive overall title to take their total wins to an impressive 18 overall.
District 10 finished with 68 points, while their nemesis, North Georgetown (District 11), was second overall with 59 points.
In addition, the champions also clinched the much-subscribed Track & Field Championships.
District three (West Demerara) maintained their fine showing in the teachers’ championship with a marginal victory over District 13 (South Georgetown).
Nicholloyd Cameron and Attoya Harvey, in 2019, won the track and field under-14 Champion boy and girl accolades.
Hannah Reid of District Four and Wesley Tyndall of District 11 won the respective champion girl and boy trophies in the under-16 age group.
Former under-16 track & field Champion girl, Deshanna Skeete of Linden, copped the under-18 prize while the impressive Melon Lowenfield won Champion boy under-18.
In the open division (under-20), North Georgetown’s Keliza Smith won champion girl after winning four events, while Encosie Leitch of Corentyne was the under-18 champion boy after amassing 32 points, two more than Joshua Tappin of District 10 and record-breaking Jumper Jennis Benjamin.
