By Sean Devers
Trinidad & Tobago made light work of the Leeward Islands in their opening game in CG United Women’s 50-over Tournament, yesterday at Providence.
Set 133 to win after restricting the LI to 132-8, the T&T ladies reached 134-2 to win by eight wickets in sunny conditions.

Djenaba Joseph, who scored 20 with two fours, Shenelle Lord, with 30 from 54 balls inclusive of five fours and Skipper, Anisa Mohammed, all contributed to the win.
Joseph was trapped LBW to Edwards with the score on 71 while six runs later, Joseph was bowled Skipper, Shawnisha Hector, the lone West Indies Women’s player from the Leeward Islands.
But Mohammad, with the experience of four World Cups, joined Lord and made an unbeaten 20 with two fours including the winning boundary to see her team to an emphatic victory to start their campaign for a 14th title, the first since 2017.
Earlier, Leeward Islands won the toss and batted on a good track with a fast outfield but with the score on seven, rain stopped play.
When play resumed, Kirbyina Alexander, who bowled nine overs on the trot, took 3-20 along with a wicket for Lee-Ann Kirby, reduced the LI to 13 – 4 in the 12th over.
Hector looked way above her mates in standard and was quickly on top of the bowling with some fluent stroke-play but fell four runs short of her fifty when she ran herself out.
Hector faced 60 balls and struck seven fours in her score of 46 and met her demise at 65-6, ending a 52-run stand with Arsheena Freeman (3), who was soon bowled by Caniesha Isaac at 87-7.
Amanda Edwards who hit four fours in 29 and Rozel Liburd, whose unbeaten 31 included three boundaries, added 45 before Edwards was run out off the last the last ball of the innings.
The tournament continues today from 09:30hrs at the same venue with defending champions Barbados facing-off with the new T20 Blaze Champions, Jamaica.
