Proceedings will get underway at 11:00 hrs with the Plate Championship’s third place playoff between Lee Fung-A-Fat and Joshua Abdool. Following that showdown, the Plate Championship finale will unfold with Jason Van Dijk and Jonathan Antczak playing for top honours.
The scheduled match at noon is the third place encounter in the Main Draw Championship that has Ian Mekdeci and Gabrielle Fraser set for battle. The day’s feature match, the grand finale, will see Alex Arjoon and Michael Alphonso face off for bragging rights.
Yesterday, the semi-final round was contested for both the Main Draw and Plate Championship. Van Dijk and Antczak were the first to taste victory with wins over Fung-A-Fat and Abdool, respectively. After that, Arjoon and Alphonso were victorious against Mekdeci and Fraser, in that order.
In the tournament played to honour the memory of the late Colin Ming, Friday Night’s action saw a small gathering of fully vaccinated spectators witnessed keenly competitive matches throughout the evening.
Mekdeci defeated Mohryan Baksh 15-9, 15-1 to qualify for yesterday morning’s semi-final of the Main Draw.
Mekdeci began with a -2 handicap while Baksh, who was slightly inaccurate on the night, began with a -8 handicap. The eventual scores did not reflect the quality of action seen as long rallies and the clever use of the court were the highlights of the contest.
In another quarterfinal bout, Steven Xavier and Fraser traded shots with intent as the former took the first game.
Fraser then engaged Xavier in very lengthy rallies which saw her take command of the court and eventually won the next two games to advance. The score line read 9-15, 15-11, 15-12 in Fraser’s favour.
Shilo Asregado lost to Alphonso in another Main Draw encounter while Arjoon bested Joshua Verwey 15-12, 15- 11 to advance.
Meanwhile, Friday Night’s Plate Quarterfinals saw Antczak beat Brian Young 15-13, 15-8, while Jonathan DeGroot lost to Van Dijk 9-15, 12-15. Abdool also defeated Andrew Peroune while Fung-A-Fat gained a walkover victory.
It was also disclosed on Friday night that Guyana will be hosting the Junior Caribbean Amateur Squash Association Tournament in July, 2022. St Vincent and the Grenadines was originally set to host the tournament but circumstances made them unable to do so.
