Public Works Ministry denies owing M&CC $300M

Kaieteur News – In a response to a Kaieteur News article published during last week titled, ‘City Mayor says Public Works Ministry should settle its $300M tax debt,’ Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, in a press release, has stated that the ministry does not owe M&CC that “exorbitant sum.” The release further stated that the Mayor, Ubraj Narine, should review his records.

According to Indar, since the Ministry took office in August 2020 to date, it has expended approximately G$793 Million on roads, sea defense, bridges, culverts, weeding and cleaning of trenches and waterways to aid in the runoff of wastewater, floodwaters and the general maintenance of the City’s infrastructure, which is the Mayor’s responsibility.
He added that recently, the Ministry would have spent funds on Mc Dougal Street, Owen Street, the Hogg and Sussex Streets Bridge and many others in the City and strongly believes that the monies would be better utilised by the Ministry of Public Works to deliver the Nation’s infrastructural needs.
He stated that these are prime responsibilities that the City Council and Mayor have reneged on for a long time now. The press release went on to ask a question to the Mayor and his entire Council, inquiring if the Ministry of Public Works should pay taxes to them to continue partying and squandering taxpayers’ monies, whilst they are failing to deliver services to the citizens of Guyana or continue to spend taxpayers’ monies to foster Guyana’s infrastructural development for the benefit of all.
“We suggest that the Mayor should concentrate on fulfilling his mandate rather than playing politics on a daily basis,” stated Indar in his release. According to the Minister, the Ministry of Public Works remains committed to ensuring that the Guyanese taxpayers’ monies are spent on the improvement of City and the country at large.
