Kaieteur News – Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, announced on Tuesday that his government is moving to implement visa requirements for Haitians and Cubans entering Guyana. He reasoned that the intended move is to “tackle” the suspected “human smuggling ring” that is allegedly trafficking the foreigners through the country.
Nandlall made the announcement during his online show called “Issues in the News”.
The AG said that the “illegal influx of aliens” and persons of various nationalities has been a problem that the country has been “grappling” with for some time now.
He continued, “It has long been suspected that they are part of a human smuggling ring of international stature.”
In order to “tackle the issue once and for all,” according to the AG, his government will be taking a position that will require visas for “these nationals” to enter Guyana, including the Haitians and Cuban nationals.
As it relates to the Haitians, Nandlall pointed out that Guyana is one of three CARICOM countries that have a “visa free immigration policy” for them.
The two other CARICOM countries are Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The rest of the Caribbean countries, related Nandlall, had to “place visa requirements because of the same thing (human trafficking)”.
He then added that Guyana is moving in that direction too. Just recently, 10 Haitians, five females and five males, were found at the Swiss Hotel located in Skeldon, Berbice, Region Six.
They had claimed that they were juveniles but they all turned out be above the age of 18. They claimed that that they were brought from Suriname via a speedboat by an individual who dropped them at the hotel and took away all of their passports, money and other personal belongings.
They are currently being housed at the Hugo Chavez Centre as police continue investigations. Sources had related that they were able to identify a suspect who they believe trafficked the 10 Haitian nationals.
