Kaieteur News – Former murder accused, Paul James was yesterday sentenced to serve 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the unlawful killing of Mahaica rice farmer, Hardat Kissoon.
James called ‘Crack’ of Lot 59 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, Georgetown was sentenced to jail by Justice Navindra Singh at the Georgetown High Court after he pleaded guilty to the lesser crime of manslaughter for the June 01, 2015 unlawful killing.According to facts of the case, Kissoon, a Cane Grove, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara rice farmer was shot and killed while he was a passenger in a minibus that was travelling along with the University of Guyana Access Road, Greater Georgetown. The father of three was reportedly shot dead by a bandit, who was posing as another passenger – Kissoon had just joined the bus after leaving a city bank with $500,000.
It was reported that the bandit had asked the driver to stop so he could get off. He then held Kissoon at gunpoint and demanded the bag containing the cash. The bandit shot the farmer to his chest before escaping on a CG motorcycle with an accomplice. Kissoon’s body was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was officially pronounced dead.
James has previously admitted that he was the “spotter” and that he alerted his accomplices after spotting Kissoon at the city bank. Two other men, Sherwin Trotman and Kirk Clarke, were also charged with Kissoon’s murder. However, both of them died when a fire destroyed the Camp Street Prison back in 2017.
The judge ordered the prison authorities to deduct from the sentence the time James spent on remand from October 2015. The former accused was represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson. His case was presented by State Counsel Tuanna Hardy and Tyra Bakker.
