Repairs to the damaged hydraulic cabin of the Demerara Harbour Bridge have been completed, according to General Manager for the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation, Rawlston Adams.
As such, marine traffic will resume on Monday.
Adams told Kaieteur News that the damaged parts were installed and tested yesterday.
The halt on the retractions however, put a pause on several shipments of needed resources, as according to Adams, there are usually three vessels passing through the river on a daily basis.
“We have at least three retractions per day so from Monday to now, you can guess, how many vessels were able to make scheduled shipments within that time.”
On Monday last, at around 11:00pm, a driver lost control of his SUV while travelling on the Demerara Harbour Bridge and slammed into the hydraulic cabin before careening overboard.
He was pulled from the vehicle, escaping without injures.
The car is still submerged in the river and is yet to be located.
The driver of the motorcar reportedly stated that while on the bridge, he lost control of the vehicle due to the rain and slammed into the cabin before plunging overboard.
When asked whether the driver would be sanctioned, Adams stated that the company’s main focus is ensuring the free flow of marine traffic.
“Sanctions will come later,” he stated.
This accident had put a temporary halt on bridge retractions as the damage to the cabin prevents the bridge from being opened.
