A donation of $3.5M was made to the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Center on Friday by the Stena Drilling Company and Falcon Logistics in a simple ceremony as part of their mandate to fulfill their corporate social responsibility.

Administrator of the Ptolemy Reid’s Rehabilitation Centre, Cynthia Massay and Stena Drilling Rig Manager, Nick Benzie along with the Chief Executive Officer of Falcon Logistics examine one of the unfinished prosthetic leg being built in the centre’s in house workshop.
The Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre (PRRC) is a not-for-profit organization providing rehabilitation services for children with physical and developmental disabilities, amputees and persons with hearing impairment.
The centre also manufactures orthotic devices and prosthetic limbs at PRRC’s National Orthotic & Prosthetic Appliance Workshop, the sole facility in Guyana capable of manufacturing these appliances. The donation was said to be a timely one since the centre is lacking crucial equipment needed to ensure they deliver quality care to their patients.
Receiving the cheque at the centers’ Carmichael Street location was Cynthia Massy, the administrator who expressed her thanks to the companies for their generous donation.
Stena Drilling Rig Manager, Nick Benzie, explained that the sum was raised during the Christmas season when the team on the rig hosted their annual raffle.
According to Benzie, the head office decided to match the sum raised by the raffle. Falcon Logistics also caught wind of the raffle and decided to get onboard, agreeing to also match the sum raised.
“Stena Drilling’s company logo incorporates our core values; care innovation and performance. Care is our primary value and this is not exclusive to our employees. As guests in many countries including Guyana, we feel it is important to respect and support local entities through social responsibility initiatives.”
Benzie explained that Stena Drilling plans to have a “positive impact on the local population through engaging local companies where ever possible both on land and offshore.”
The rehabilitation centre is the only one of its kind in Guyana and boasts a number of crucial services which include their rehabilitation programme that focuses on physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy.
Although the centre relies heavily on the support of donors and friends to make these services possible, the bulk of its services are provided free of cost in its efforts to ensure that quality rehabilitation care is always within reach of those who need it.
