Play in the Farfan and Mendes Junior Skill Level Squash Tournament at the Georgetown Club Camp Street will conclude today with the finals in the various categories. However, in the third night of play on Friday, keen competition was the order of the night. In Category A, Shomari Wiltshire was again in action as he battled against Michael Alphonso. Alphonso who is the current Caribbean Under 15 champion was excellent in his retrievals during the match but the pace and precision of Shomari’s shots would prove to be too much to handle. Shomari comfortable won the first game 11/3, but the intensity of the rallies increased in game two with Michael winning a few of them but still lost the game 11/4. Shomari closed out the contest with an identical 11/4 win in the third game.
In the other Category A match, Nicholas Verwey proved to be too strong for Gianni Carpenter. Gianni has improved tremendously and showed that he is no longer a pushover for any opponent. The first game was fairly close with Nicholas winning it 11/7. He comfortable won the second game 11/3 but had to work extremely hard to secure victory in the third game winning that game 11/9 and the match by three games to love.
In Category C, Zachary Persaud got a scare from Shiloh Asregado. Shiloh was out of the gates quickly and won the first game 11/7. When he won the second game 11/5 it seemed as if an upset was on the cards. The third game was extremely close but Zachary held his nerve to win it 11/9. Zachary comfortable won the fourth game 11/6 then dominated the fifth game to win it 11/1.
In the other category C match, Louis Da Silva easily disposed of Lajuan Munroe in straight games 11/ 3, 11/4, 11/1 to move one step closer to the highly anticipated rematch against Zachary Persaud which is scheduled for today.
In category D, Dhiren Persaud upset the higher ranked Teija Edwards moving her around the court with delicate shots to eventually secure a well deserved victory 11/3, 11/3, 11/9, while Rayad Boyce had to work much harder to defeat Lucas Persaud. Rayad won the first game 11/4 and then moved closer to victory with an 11/5 win in game two. However, Lucas would not go down without a fight and clawed his way back into the match by winning the third game 11/7. Rayad however would close out the match with a close 11/8 win in game four.
Matches continued yesterday with the final games set for today from 11.00 am.
