Defending Champions Essequibo defeated East Bank Demerara by 10 wickets while Georgetown, West Berbice and Lower Corentyne chalked wins in their respective matches when the Guyana Cricket Board U17 Female Franchise T20 League commenced yesterday.
East Bank Demerara batted first and were sent packing for 59 in 18 overs at the Everest Cricket Club. Lisa Charles rocked the top order by removing Alexis Scott (03) and Shania Maglowe (01) while Analesia D’ Aguiar sent back Teanna Britton (03) to reduce the East Bank Franchise to 9-3.
Laveena Ragubeer had Esther Adams (01) caught at the wicket before Devine Ross sent back Ashley Rai (03) as wickets continued to tumble. However Alexis Noel rallied the lower order somewhat, striking three fours in a top score of 22 while extras contributed 21-all wides. Ragubeer claimed 2-8; Ross had 2-11, D’Aguiar 2-14 and Charles 2-15.
Essequibo openers D’ Aguiar and Navika Narine hardly put a foot wrong as they galloped to victory in 8.3 overs, putting on unbroken partnership of 62. D’ Aguiar struck five fours in scoring 26 while Narine made 24 with two fours. D’ Aguiar was named player-of-the-match.
Georgetown beat West Demerara by 26 runs at the same venue. Georgetown took first strike and managed 84-2 in 15 overs. Althea Barnwell led with 34 which included two fours while Neha Singh scored 21; the duo put on 72 for the opening stand.
West Demerara were restricted for 58-5 in reply. Kezie Methland scored 21 not out as Arehanna Persaud captured 3-8 to earn the player-of-the-match award. The game was reduced to 15 overs.
At Young Warriors ground in Berbice – West Berbice defeated Upper Corentyne by nine runs. West Berbice took first strike and scored 138-1. Tiea Isaccs struck an unbeaten 31 while Tamara George made 16 not out. The pair added 135 for the second wicket after opener Tienacua Solomon was bowled by Shania Fraser for five.
Upper Corentyne replied with 129-6. Fraser made 19 while Alelia De Mendonca and Shania King chipped in with 12 and 11 respectively. Alicia Fordyce captured 3-25. Lower Corentyne overcame East Coast Demerara by two wickets. East Coast Demerara scored 78 all out in 19.2 overs.
Sarah Amin made 17 not out while extras contributed 32. Jamie Campbell took 2-12 while five batters were dismissed via run out. Lower Corentyne responded with 79-8 in 15 overs. Merzina Rogers got 16 while Shenia Simon and Realeana Grimmond contributed 12 and 11 respectively. The competition continues today with Upper Corentyne facing West Demerara and Lower Corentyne playing Essequibo at Cumberland while at Everest, Georgetown will take on West Berbice and East Bank will face East Coast Demerara.
