Technology boost for Bina Hill students ─ 34 students from Regions 1, 7, 8 & 9 to benefit

The Bina Hill Institute’s Youth Learning Centre (YLC) in Annai, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, received 10 new laptops on Friday.

Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Sydney Allicock handing over the laptops to the students of Bina Hill Youth Learning Centre.

The computers will benefit 34 students who recently participated in an Information and Communication Technology workshop organised by First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger.
The three-week-long workshop, being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Protection’s Board of Industrial Training (BIT), includes tuition on STEM Robotics and Microenterprise.
The computers were handed over to the students and administrators of the technical institution by Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock, who was in the North Rupununi village for a community meeting.
He was accompanied by Member of Parliament (MP), Mervyn Williams and Guyana’s High Commissioner to India, David Pollard.
During the simple presentation ceremony, Minister Allicock explained that the initiative aims to ensure the students have access to the tools that will enable them to fully utilise their skills. The institution already has access to internet services through e-government services.
This, Minister Allicock emphasised, is a testimony to the importance the Coalition government has placed on education. It also forms part of a national programme to ensure all citizens, regardless of their location, have access to information via the installation of ICT hubs in every community and educational institution. Today, over 100 of such hubs have been constructed and are equipped with the requisite tools.
Bina Hill Youth Learning Centre is the lone technical institution in Region 9 and caters to Indigenous youths from Regions 1, 7, 8 and 9. (DPI)
