Minister Volda Lawrence and Minister within the Ministry, Karen Cummings and team being greeted on arrival in the East Bank Berbice district.
In keeping with President David Granger’s vision to have health care facilities in every district, two new health centres were commissioned in East Berbice, Corentyne. The centres were commissioned at Plegt Anker, East Bank Berbice and at No. 76 Village Corentyne.
The Plegt Anker facility was constructed at a cost of $14M. It will serve a catchment area of approximately 800 persons resident in Plegt Anker, Highbury, Mara, Schepmoed and Lighttown.
The No.76 facility was constructed and fully furnished at a cost of $16M and will benefit mainly the approximately 3,000 residents in the new housing area. The health centres have all the necessary departments needed for primary health care.
The commissioning of the health centres was highly anticipated by residents.

Ministers of Public Health Hon. Volda Lawrence and Dr. Karen Cummings cut the ribbon to officially open the Plegt Anker Health Centre.
One resident said that the establishment of the health centres was timely. He said that he resides in a remote
community on the East Bank of Berbice and has already been accessing the services. He said that he never expected a thing like this would happen in his area.
The health centres will reduce the number of persons travelling long distances to receive medical attention.
This commissioning of the facilities fulfills part of the Ministry of Public Health’s 2020 health vision, which mandates that healthcare in Guyana is universal and is accessible to all persons.
Services at the health centres will be focused mainly on maternal and child health and preventative health care. Clinics for chronic disease patients will be facilitated.
The centres are expected to be staffed with a doctor, a community health worker, a nursing assistant and an attendant among others.
The residents were urged to ensure that the centres are properly maintained and sustained. “Health Services can only be effective if we have all stakeholders on board as we forge a network of integrated health services delivery.”
