4 years in jail, $13M fine for waitress busted with coke

Admitting that she had nothing to say in relation to her guilty plea on a cocaine trafficking charge, 23-year-old Reena Jagernauth was yesterday sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for the offence when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Jagernauth, a waitress, of Paramaribo, Suriname, confessed that on April 1, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara, she had 4.853kg (equivalent to almost 11 pounds) of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, on the day in question Jagernauth was an outgoing passenger at the airport destined for Panama via Copa Airlines.
While at the airport, ranks from the Police Narcotics Branch observed her acting in a suspicious manner and approached her, during which they requested to search her person and luggage. The ranks found a quantity of cocaine stashed in book covers, deodorant and cream bottles, make-up kits and hair-cutting machines.
Police say that the woman admitted to the crime while in custody at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown. Reports indicate that Jagernauth cut holes in the centre of four books and stuffed the illicit drugs inside.
Reports are that she also attempted to glue the covers of the books together. In addition to the prison term, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the drug trafficker pay a fine of $13,146,777.
