Whilst meetings are being held by the Regional Cultural Committee (RCC) in Trinidad and Tobago with regards to Carifesta XIV 2019, Guyana has been doing some preparations of its own for the event.
An official correspondence has been received from the Carifesta committee inviting Guyana to be a part of the festivities this year.
Locally, invitations were being sent out to the public for those interested in taking part, provided they have what it takes to join a team, as meetings were held regarding the submissions.
During an interview yesterday, with Ruel Johnson, the Cultural Policy Advisor at the Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport, it was made known that Guyana will be taking part this year, and the teams are currently being assembled.
When asked about the different aspects of the event being ventured into, he said that the department is currently looking at the performing arts, visual arts and the literary arts, amongst others.
“It is obvious that this is a time consuming and vigorous task especially in the case of the performing arts, as Carifesta is a regional event.
“We would not want to put mediocre work out there, as the eyes of the entire Caribbean would be on us,” he said.
With regards to the performing arts, schedules will be put in place to facilitate adequate rehearsals.
Mr. Johnson assured that since the event is scheduled for August, the teams would be more than ready to perform.
A budget is yet to be finalized as the department has to look at the cost of tickets, prices of rooms for comfortable accommodation and also the number of persons that will be embarking on the journey to Guyana’s continental neighbour.
A meeting is to be held on Thursday to, at least, get the final number and get the budget in order that preparations can stay on track, Johnson said.
