(Kaieteur News) – The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) will soon see the installation of digital scanners at the customs department a move President Irfaan Ali said, will aid with self-declaration of passengers’ baggage.
During his feature address at the opening of Optique Eye Hospital on Friday, the head of state stated that installation forms part of the government’s transformational plans for the airport.
“We’re now investing in the latest digital scanners to put at customs and we will be enforcing self-declaration, so the onus for accountability and transparency will be on you,” he said.
The president said everything will pass through the scanner. There will also be a three-strike system that will result in penalties if persons make false declaration.
“We’re going to give you a free experience, no custom officer will stop you. But the digital scanners would have all of the information from your bags for 45 days. You self-declare, if you lie to us the first time a fine, the second time a heavier fine, and the third time, jail,” he stated
He said the system is very simple. “We want to remove the human biases that not only sometimes allow for bias in the system, but also affect the experience of persons coming in.”
More on the airport, the president said the new Terminal Two under construction will give passengers a real Guyana experience.
“The word has moved away for the normative way of doing things and every human want and experience. Terminal Two of the airport is designed to give you an experience from the time you enter the country, so if you enter for healthcare, Terminal Two will position you for that service,” he said.
