(Kaieteur News) – A 19-year-old Venezuelan national was on Sunday arrested for having in his possession a 9mm pistol containing a magazine with eight live matching rounds of ammunition, while not being the holder of a firearm license.
An investigation has been launched by police into the discovery which was made around 18:30hrs, during an operation conducted at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. “Enquiries revealed that ranks were in the vicinity of a business establishment on the Railway Embankment, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, when they observed a 19-year-old Venezuelan national of Sophia, East Coast Demerara, standing on the roadway with what appeared to be a bulky object in his pants waist,” police said in a statement.
The suspect was seen removing a black object, that appeared to be a handgun from the waist of his pants and throwing it to the ground beside him, the statement read.
The object was retrieved and found to be a black 9mm pistol containing a magazine with eight live matching rounds of ammunition. When asked if he was the holder of a firearm license, the suspect reportedly replied in the negative. He was arrested and escorted to the Vigilance Police Station along with the gun and ammunition which were lodged.
The suspect remains in police custody assisting with investigations.
