Ryan Sugrim, 37, a business man of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, yesterday in the Leonora Magistrates’ Courts was released on bail after he was charged for unlawful restraint and causing grievous bodily harm.
The charges alleged that on December 14, 2018 at La Grange, Sugrim wrongfully restrained Zaila Sugrim. It was further alleged that on the same day at La Grange, Sugrim unlawfully and maliciously caused grievous bodily harm to Zaila Sugrim.
On the day in question, the parties had a heated domestic argument that led to Sugrim inflicting a sound trashing on Zaila which caused traumas to the head, neck and face. As a result Zaila was hospitalized for five days.
Zaila, who was present at the hearing, appeared to be in severe pain. She still had bloodshot eyes and had to walk with support from a family member.
In a previous interview, Zaila stated that she is fearful for her life given the fact that her husband nearly killed her.
In his application for bail Sugrim’s attorney stated that the defendant is the sole bread winner for the home. He was already released on station bail and is currently in court fighting for custody of their five children.
The Police Prosecutor had no objections to bail, however he asked that conditions be attached. Bail was then granted to Sugrim to the tune of $100, 000 each for the charges.
The condition of the bail is that he report to the La Grange police station once every week between Monday and Friday and is to stay 100 feet from Zaila and her place of abode or in default his bail will be revoked.
The matter was adjourned to February 28, 2019 at the Wales Magistrate’s Courts.
