Turbo Football Championship Reynolds led Rangers clinch title; GFC’s search for silverware continues

When the final whistle of the Second annual Turbo football championship blew on Wednesday night at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground, Northern Rangers and their fans erupted into celebration after clinching an excellent 2-1 come from behind victory against rivals Georgetown Football Club (GFC).

It has been decades since GFC last tasted silverware and the incumbent troops would’ve felt that they had one hand on the Turbo Championship Cup and the $800,000 first place cash prize after Marcus Wilson fired the men in blue into the lead in the 21st minute.
However, Rangers showed intent right after and could’ve scored twice through a one v one opportunities and a Nigel Denny long range effort which smashed the crossbar. But, Denny, who was outspoken in the press before the match, made amends and equalised for his team with a well placed header following a corner in the 41st minute.
Northern Rangers’ eldest player, Denny (43 year-old), had posited to this publication that GFC has gotten the better of his side in recent meetings and he was out to exact revenge, and when his skipper Stephan Reynolds (18 years-old) smashed in a 25 yard strike from the left; beating GFC’s custodian on his near post in the 63rd minute, the mission was minutes from being complete.

Although Rangers found some time to get the equaliser, GFC were outplayed by the Northern Rangers side that consists predominantly of older players and a cricketer; former Guyana Under-19 leg spinner Steven Sankar.
Teenage sensation, Reynolds, was outstanding on left wing with his pace, control and dribbling causing many troubles for the GFC defence and it is remarkable that GFC only lost by one goal with the numerous plays that Rangers created.
Many GFC fans on the sidelines bemoaned the tired tactics of player/coach Dellon Cadogan, who didn’t feature himself in the game. Speaking to Kaieteur Sport after the match, Reynolds, who will surely be on the radar of some of the Elite clubs of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)

when the transfer window opens on January 1st, expressed satisfaction with his performance and the victory.
“Since I am the captain of the team, I am very happy to have performed well by scoring the vital goal that gave us the victory. I am proud of my team, everyone did their part and we played as a unit, this is a well deserved victory”, Reynolds noted.
Meanwhile, earlier in the evening during the third place playoff, Mahaica Determinators of East Coast Demerara needled city side Santos FC through an Eon Abel goal which was scored on the stroke of half time.
A total of 1.5 million in prize money was up for grabs with the runners up pocketing $400,000, third place $300,000 and fourth $200,000.
