A man, who dealt two police officers several bites and kicks about their bodies after they tried to arrest him, was yesterday charged for assaulting the ranks and inflicting grievous bodily harm on his girlfriend.
Twenty-four-year-old Kerwin Estwick, a labourer of South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge alleged that on October 21, 2018, at Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Sharon Clarke.
It was further alleged that on December 11, 2018, at South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, he assaulted Detective Constable Keston Peters with intent to prevent lawful apprehension of himself.
The last charge stated that on December 11, 2018, at South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, Estwick assaulted Police Constable Shaquille Mackintosh with intent to prevent lawful apprehension of himself.
Estwick denied all the allegations after they were read to him. He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-fat who asked the court to release his client on reasonable bail.
The lawyer added that his client and Clarke were involved in an altercation, and she reported the matter to the police.
However, facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield, stated that on October 12 last, Estwick and Clarke had an argument and she stopped a taxi and entered.
However, an irate Estwick pulled the woman out of the car, causing her to receive injuries to her right leg. He then made good his escape.
Clarke reported the matter to the police. However, on December 11, Detective Constable Peters and Constable Mackintosh, who are stationed at the Linden Police Station and attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), were on patrol duty when they saw Estwick in the vicinity of South Amelia’s Ward.
The ranks then exited the patrol van and proceeded to arrest the man who was standing at a corner. The arrest was easier said than done. The man bit the ranks and punched them about their bodies.
He then managed to take away a pair of handcuffs and hit them about their bodies.
The court heard that after several minutes of attempting to arrest the defendant, the officers finally managed to handcuff him and placed him inside the police van.
He was then taken to the Linden Police Station, and charged for the offence.
While Prosecutor Mansfield had no objections to bail being granted to Estwick, he asked that conditions be attached.
The Magistrate, after listening to the Prosecutor’s facts, released Estwick on $20,000 bail.
Conditions of the bail are that Eswick reports every Monday at the Linden Magistrates’ Courts. He was also placed on a bond to be of good behaviour until the hearing and determination of the trial.
Estwick will make his next court appearance on January 7, 2019 at the Linden Magistrates’ Courts where he will be served with statements.
