DEAR EDITOR,
It is no doubt that the APNU-AFC coalition has made some mistakes during its short but commendable term of being in office as the Government of Guyana. However, such blunders have a way of coming back to haunt those who are held responsible. Mistakes do have consequences following them. In the government of Guyana’s case there is no difference.
The major one of those mistakes, I believe, is when speedy action was not taken to punish those who were responsible for the stealing of state assets, and the misuse of the nation’s financial resources. This failure to act may have seemed democratic, but it also allowed for the speeding of a dangerous bug in the life of the young Guyanese, and given a chance to those who were let off, time to recuperate and launch other destructive attacks against the success of the nation’s development.
The bug I refer to is that of young Guyanese being willing to get themselves involved in crime, not caring about the consequences. These acts of theirs suggest that we may have produced a lost generation of people, or that there is a mindset among them crime pays ,and that they will get away with it .
The case of the punishment not fitting the crime is not an issue here. Since the conditions in our prisons remain very harsh, and the slow pace of the legal system can also deter one from even thinking of putting their life on remand and having to wait for ages to be tried.
As a Christian minister, my view of what is going on in Guyana today amongst our youth is an expression of no hope in life, and in their future. I do agree that the solution is with the church, that ambassador of hope. Nevertheless, I also appeal to politicians with selfish agendas to get out of the game.
Guyana at this stage of her development needs people who love people, to be in charge of the nation’s business. Those who are out to get rich quick, build mansions, drive the most expensive cars, and treat people like dirt, that’s not needed.
The horizon ahead of Guyana looks good, but the nation is sick, and those with a desire to restore health are who we need in every area of government. Let us consider these things my fellow Guyanese as we go to the polls shortly.
Apostle Adrian Wade
