A man who allegedly set his house ablaze last week Tuesday, was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Esther Sam.
Rickford Williams, 56, of Charity, Essequibo Coast, made his first appearance before Magistrate Sam in the Charity Magistrate’s Court yesterday; charged with arson.
According to the charge read against him, Williams allegedly set fire to his home in Charity squatting area on July 17, 2018.
Williams who was not required to plead to the charge read against him, was remanded to prison by Magistrate Esther Sam. Though the man was not required to plead, he did say in court yesterday that he took a smoke and threw the cigarette at the generator; he suggested that this may have caused the fire.
Williams later appealed for bail, but this was denied by the magistrate, who reasoned that the man has no fixed place of residence, and as such is a flight risk.
He was thus remanded to prison and is expected to make his next appearance on August 20, next.
