Both Joshua Lennox Buchanan and Shannard Mentos of the Guyana Judo Association climbed onto the third step of the podium in the U73 kg and U90 kg division respectively at the recently concluded Junior CARIFTA Judo 2018 tournament, which was held in the city of Nassau in the Bahamas.
CARIFTA Judo 2018 was the second installment after being instituted into the CARIFTA Games in 2017. The countries which participated in the event were Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Bahamas.
The historic event saw athletes from Guyana for the first time medaling at the prestigious regional games.
The athletes exclaimed that their successes were realized mainly due to them remaining focus on their game plan of winning throughout the two days of competition. They have also posited that they successfully defeated several competitors in several bouts which made them ascended to gain bronze medals, a release from the association informed.
The matches were fiercely fought by our athletes according to Coach and President of the Guyana Judo Association, Mr. Raoul Archer, which brought them the desired results which they attained.
He draws attention to the fact that our athletes were privileged to be coached and mentored by a twenty (20) time world champion judoka from Cuba who is an internationally recognized Coach, and is currently training the Bahamian National Team to participate in the upcoming World Junior Championships to be held in the Bahamas in October of this year.
Joshua Buchanan got a Bronze medal in his individual competition, while Shannard Mentos copped two bronze medals, both in his individual bout as well as a team medal.
Mr. Archer, who is also the General Secretary of CARIFTA JUDO group, noted that he was one of the main architects, along the Bahamian and Barbadian Presidents in having Judo being instituted into the CARIFTA games.
The release noted that, Mr. Archer has expressed his appreciation to the Bahamas Judo Federation and their President Mr. D’Arcy Rahming for assisting our association and athletes for successfully participating in the games. He would also like to thank the Guyana Olympics Association for their kind assistance, Bettencourt’s Foods Inc of D’Urban Street, Sankar’s Auto, and others who would like to remain anonymous.
Mr. Buchanan has been offered a scholarship to attend the Bahamian University through his international experience, and one of the International Judo Federation’s international referees, Mr. Keith Weathers, has committed himself to assist wherever possible to develop the sport of judo here in Guyana.
