Attorney-at-law and former Magistrate, Chandra Sohan, was yesterday hauled before the court and slapped with a charge of attempting to obstruct the course of justice in the preliminary inquiry (PI) of the murdered carpenter, Faiyaz Narinedatt.
Chandra Sohan, 52, of Lot 47 Palmyra Village, who is no stranger to controversy, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alex Moore and pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him.
He is being represented by a battery of lawyers, among them Attorney’s Bernard DaSilva, Murseline Bhaccus, Joel Edmond, Arud Gossai and Ryan Crawford.
The attorney is accused of allegedly advising witness, Zubir Ally, to provide false evidence before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the PI of murder carpenter Faiyaz Narinedatt and had made an appearance before Singh stating that the statement by the witness was false.
He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to court on July 18.
On October 2017, Sohan was arrested, based on statements that were given by a suspect who was detained. The eyewitness had reportedly identified Sohan as the individual from the legal fraternity who influenced him to persuade another witness to change his story.
The witness reportedly was told to tell the court that the police had forced him to sign the statement. Sohan had denied the allegation at that time.
Also in July 2017, Sohan was arrested at the Springlands Court for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The alleged murder of Berbice carpenter, Faiyaz Narindedatt, has been widely publicized. The Preliminary Inquiry currently ongoing at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court has had many persons allegedly involved in witness tampering.
US based Philanthropist, Marcus Bisram, is currently fighting extradition for his suspected role in the crime.
Five other men, including Bisram’s bodyguard, were charged with the murder. Bisram, police have alleged, procured and commanded Orlando Dickie, Radesh Motie, Diodath Datt, Harri Paul Parsram, and Niran Yacoob to murder Narinedatt between October 31 and November 1, 2016, at Number 70 Village, Berbice.
