Patricia Sanasie’s accused killer for trial this session

Richard Stanton, who was charged back in 2015 with the murder of Patricia Sanasie, is scheduled to go on trial for the offence at the Demerara Assizes, according to information released by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The current session of the Demerara Assizes commenced on June 5, at the High Court in Georgetown. Three judges have been rostered to preside over some 223 cases.
Among the cases listed for trial are those for murder, manslaughter, abduction, attempt to commit murder, and sexual offences—which include rape, incest, buggery and carnal knowledge.
Stanton is accused of killing the woman on January 12, 2015 at Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara.
According to reports, 45-year-old Sanasie was riddled with bullets by gunmen clad in black. She was shot to the chest, abdomen, neck and groin.
The shooting occurred almost a year after her husband survived a similar attempt on his life. It was reported that Romona Sanasie, daughter of the deceased, positively identified Stanton as her mother’s killer. At the time of her mother’s death, the young woman was in the car with her mother.
Stanton, who was the subject of a preliminary inquiry before the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts, had been committed to stand trial for the killing in May 2016, by Magistrate Zamina Ally-Seepaul.
The Magistrate had ruled that there was sufficient evidence against the murder accused for him to be tried by a jury.
During her ruling, the Magistrate had said, “She (Romona Sanasie) said that he (Stanton) was wearing a transparent blue rag covering his lips and chin. She said that two times he looked directly at her and they made eye contact.
And then three months later, Romona Sanasie went on an ID parade… and on that ID parade she picked out the accused, Richard Stanton as the person who shot and killed her mother.”
The Magistrate had pointed out that issues pertaining to inconsistencies and discrepancies in the evidence will be for a jury to determine, adding that, Romona Sanasie provided an explanation for every inconsistency put to her.

The Magistrate added that it will also be left up to a jury to determine who to believe, where her (Romona’s) evidence contradicts the evidence of other witnesses who testified during the preliminary inquiry.
