The Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs has announced that steps were taken to fill the top three solicitor posts within the department.
The Chambers in a statement yesterday explained that to improve the output of legal calibre and practice three skilful individuals were appointed to hold the senior post of Deputy Solicitor General (DSG); Assistant Solicitor General (ASG); and State Solicitor, Public Trustee/Official Receiver.
According to a statement, the Attorneys Deborah Kumar, Beverley Bishop-Cheddie, and Jennifer Ayana McCalman were appointed to the three top positions respectively.
The statement went on to point out that the objective of the Ministry is to ensure value is added and to select candidates who are capable of getting the job done because employee performance is critical to overall success in the public affairs.
According to the Ministry, the new Deputy Solicitor General, Deborah Kumar, is a Queen’s College graduate, the holder of Bachelors of Law Degree from the University of Guyana, and a Law Education Certificate at the Hugh Wooding Law School. Kumar was admitted to the bar since 2001 and the Bar of the Republic of Trinidad on November 12, 2004.
“She has a wealth of knowledge and experience within the practice for almost 18 years. Ms. Deborah Kumar has been in private practice which she embraces as it was the stepping stone for the blossom of her career. She has always had a passion for public service and now assumed and dedicates her time at the Ministry of Legal Affairs.
“She could not cease to emphasize her zeal to selflessly work, dutifully serve and contribute her expertise in the public realm,” the AG Chambers said in a statement.
Mrs. Bishop-Cheddie also a Queen’s College graduate, brings with her 11 years of experience and knowledge in the legal profession.
She has a first degree in Social Work and a degree in Law at the University of Guyana and a LEC from the Hugh Wooding Law School which she successfully completed in 2006. She was also employed as a Judicial Research Assistant for T&T Judiciary during 2006-2010 at the magistracy and appellate levels.
“Upon return to Guyana, she was engaged in private practice as Advocate Attorney where she considered it an honour to represent clients as she is passionate against injustice. She also held the post of temporary Magistrate.
Her desire to render service to her country and the people of Guyana places her at a great advantage to hold the post of Assistant Solicitor General. Bishop-Cheddie has dutifully assumed Assistant Solicitor General at the Ministry.”
Similarly, the statement added that State Solicitor, Public Trustee/Official Receiver Ms. McCalman graduated from the University of Guyana in 2003 and holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree with Distinction.
She is the recipient of the University of Guyana Pro-Chancellor’s Medal, graduating as the Best Law Student within the Faculty of Law in 2003.
