Dear Editor,
The Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana (TAAMOG) is calling on the administration of Mae’s private school in Subryanville to apologise to the Amerindian child it discriminated against, because the child wore his cultural attire as part of the school’s observance of Guyana’s Independence celebration.
It is important as well that the private school needs to apologise to the parents of the child who attends that school and to Guyana’s Indigenous or first Peoples.
Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples are hurt over the arrogance and ignorance displayed by the school’s administration in its claim that the child’s wear was “inappropriate”.
This shows that the teachers of the school are all ignorant about the culture of Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples and as a manner of urgentcy they all need to get themselves educated.
What a shame and disgrace on the part of Mae’s private school. TAAMOG will seek to ensure that the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) adequately deals with this offensive and discriminatory manner to the full satisfaction of the Indigenous child, his parents and to Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples.
Yours Sincerely,
Peter Persaud.
