Pepsi Under-16 shifted to Sunday at Gymnasium

The Guyana Boxing Association has shifted the venue and date of this year’s first Pepsi Michael Parris Under-16 boxing competition. First scheduled for this Saturday at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym, the 20-fight card has been moved to Sunday at the National Gymnasium.
GBA president Steve Ninvalle explained that the shift has been long in coming as the competition had been slowly out growing the Andrew Lewis gym. “The conditions there were quite cramped for such competitions so we decided to switch. It means that fans can now watch our young pugilists in a more comfortable environment,” Ninvalle said.
He added that Technical Director Terrence Poole is in charge of organizing the event which is expected to have 20 fights. Several gyms from across the country will battle for honours including, the recently formed Savannah Boxing Gym of Region Nine and the Moruca Power Right gym of Region One.
The two gyms were formed within the last six months after the direct intervention of Minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton who is instrumental in the employment of Coach Orland Rogers. The diminutive and roving Rogers, currently in Region Seven, has been moving to regions and honing the skills of future champions.
Other gyms expected to participate are: Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Pocket Rocket, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Vergenoegen (formerly Essequibo), Rose Hall Jammers and Carryl Boxing Gym. Vergenoegen will be led by the seasoned and talented Shaquincy Wright, a Best Boxers of several similar events.
The competition has been named after Guyana’s only Olympic medalist. The first punch is at 5:00pm. Guyana’s silver medalist at last year’s Youth Commonwealth Games ‘Lightning’ Keevin Allicock is a product of the DDL Under-16 programme which is in its sixth year.
Admission is $500.
