Over 50 agro-processors are expected to be a part of this year’s “UncappeD Marketplace” hosted by the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA). It is an exhibition, which allows for the promotion of local agro-processing products to be showcased for local consumers.
The event, which is slated for April 29 will be held at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank, Demerara. It is being held for the second time.
Speaking at the launch on Friday was Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, who lauded the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) for a good job at promoting the local agro-processors in Guyana.
“Every time I come here, I see more and more local products, and the packaging of our products have improved tremendously over the last few years and I am very pleased at the works the GMC is doing in that regard,” he said.
Sandra Craig, owner of SS Natural Fruit Flavours, said she has seen growth in her business after attending the last UncappeD Marketplace place event.
Craig was awarded by the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association in recognition of her pioneer spirit of product.
“Attending UncappeD has helped me to showcase my product to Guyana people, which has inspired me to work harder to develop my brand,” Craig said.
In her remarks, she encouraged other local agro-processors to be a part of UncappeD to showcase their products and to take advantage of the opportunities the exhibition has to offer.
Last year’s exhibition attracted about 60 exhibitors and more than 5000 persons. More than two dozen exhibitors were able to increase their business locally and one exhibitor was able to get an export market.
The exhibition will allow exhibitors to showcase and sell their products to a wider national audience and to also network their businesses.
“We believe that agro-processing has a place in Guyana. To export things out of Guyana in the Primary, you don’t make any money from that.
“In the meantime, what we want to do is to build the capacity of the small agro-processors to help them to find niche markets in the Caribbean, in Guyana to start with, and if possible, in the US…and Canada,” said Ramsay Ali, first Vice President of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association.
UncappeD Marketplace, formally Guyanese Flavour Uncapped is a private sector-led initiative and will be entirely free to exhibitors as well as the general public.
This year, the GMSA has partnered with other entities such as ExxonMobil, Key Sponsor; and the National Communication Network (NCN). Other sponsors for the event are Sterling Products Limited, DDL, Banks, Beharry, IPED and the Ministry of Business.
The event will be held in other regions of the country later this year.
