Guyanese man accused of entering homes, watching people sleep

BALLSTON, Saratoga, NY – Closing arguments were being heard on Monday in the trial of the Saratoga County man accused of breaking into homes and watching people sleep.
Ramiz Hajratalli, 32, is being tried on burglary charges related to two incidents in Saratoga Springs.
After the closing arguments end, it will be up to a jury to decide if Hajratalli is guilty of illegally entering two homes and watching people sleep.
Hajratalli, a native of Guyana, has been on trial for about two and a half weeks. He’s accused of breaking into two Saratoga Springs homes last summer.
At the second home, the occupant woke up, chased the intruder down the street and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.
The retired police detective who did that was the first to testify against Hajratalli in the trial.
After that incident and arrest, police compared fingerprints and found Hajratalli’s prints were found at an unsolved burglary on Caroline Street a couple weeks earlier in which a man let himself into an apartment and watched a woman sleep.
During closing arguments on Monday afternoon, Hajratalli’s attorney said police have the wrong guy. Attorney Kevin Luibrand said the fingerprints were not an exact match and that state scientists and police rushed to judgment. In fact, at one point, he called it “fake science.”
Luibrand told the jury on Monday afternoon that Hajratalli is stable and not the kind of person that criminal prosecutors portray.
Assistant District Attorney, Al Poremba said there’s no doubt that the man caught in the former investigator’s house was Hajratalli.
Summations were expected to wrap up soon. Then, the judge will charge the jury on Tuesday morning, followed by deliberations immediately after that.
Hajratalli turned down a plea offer that would have sent him to prison for seven years. If he’s convicted of the top counts in this case, he could be looking at 30 years in state prison. (wnyt.com/news)
