Thirty two officers for Community Policing Groups (CPGs) in the Demerara-Mahaica area embarked on a training workshop to promote areas in Diversity and Social Inclusion Education.
The workshop was aimed at identifying the participant’s own hidden biases, which contribute to separatism. It was also intended to help the participants take steps to learn to build better relationships. It was held at the Women’s Leadership Institute, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
The workshop, which had a duration of two days, was spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Cohesion.
Participants were encouraged to take advantage of the skills learned as it leads to introspection and empathy as such skills would better enable participants to serve the diverse population of Guyana.
In a comment made by Mr. Dennis Pompey, the Administrator for CPG in Guyana, social cohesion must start in the home before it can be taken into the wider community, but must be understood by the individual first.
Trainer Ms. Rolinda Kirton said that the intention of the workshop was to help the participants to better understand how diversity is viewed and how to respond to diversity.
She stated also that to truly have an impact, “the issue of where it is we have to go must be addressed.”
Participants said that they intend to share their knowledge with peers in an effort to transform their environment.
Mr. Bevan Thomas, Chairman of Division C3 and member of the David Rose – Lancaster CPG, participated to improve his leadership skills, and noted that as a family man and figurehead in his community, the skills acquired at the workshop are necessary and useful in everyday life.
“Social cohesion is a very important factor for this county and for our families,” said Pandit Roopnarain Persaud, an associate of Division C3. He said that being a part of the workshop enhanced his knowledge, enabling him to influence change toward a peaceful and developed community.
