The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) is asking that the charges and conviction recorded against Donald Rodney, the brother of deceased political activist Dr. Walter Rodney, be withdrawn.
Executive Member of the party, Dr David Hinds, on Wednesday said that the decision to request the withdrawal of the charges and conviction came out of the party’s General Members and Supporters Meeting that was held Sunday last.
He said, “At our members’ meeting on Sunday we also discussed the question of the Rodney Commission of Inquiry. We were asked by the members to address specifically one question, as it relates to the situation of Donald Rodney who was charged for being in possession of the explosives that killed Dr. Rodney. We are requesting that those charges be withdrawn and the party has mandated us to pursue that matter.”
Rodney’s brother was convicted for being in possession of an explosive and was made to serve an 18-month sentence. In November 2015, political activist Eusi Kwayana had called on the Attorney-General Basil Williams to quash the conviction of Donald Rodney.
Kwayana had said that Williams would be failing in his duty and his professional ethics if he does not move to quash the Donald Rodney’s mistrial and conviction.
Meanwhile, a number of other issues consumed the meeting on Sunday. Following discussions, the party reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a multi-racial solution to Guyana’s overarching problems in the interest of the security of all Guyanese.
In a statement supplied to the media on Wednesday it was stated the WPA continued participation in the government must be premised on a commitment to preserve the party’s Rodneyite identity, its independent voice, the right to critique the performance of the government and the party’s ability to influence the government to use the country’s resources to directly influence the lives of Guyanese.
“There was consensus that the party must continue to be the voice of reason and self-critique within the governing coalition.”
Further, the statement that was read by Chairperson of the party, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, said that the meeting recommended that the WPA should refresh and broaden its ideological and general political orientation to serve as the core of a National Renewal Movement.
This, according to the party, will be aimed at mobilising broad sections of the Guyanese population in order to arrest the drift in the society and help restore hope for a better future for the broad masses of people, especially the most vulnerable.
Further, it was decided by the party that the rebuilding of the WPA should begin immediately with the reactivation of its key organs, re-energising existing members and recruiting new members and allies.
