The body of an 18-year-old man was fished out of the Moruca River, Region One around 08:00 hrs yesterday, one day after he fell overboard during a boat accident.
The dead teen has been identified as Ravin Piper, a farmer of Father’s Beach, a village between Moruca and the Pomeroon River.
His father, 42-year-old George Piper is feared dead and up to press time, coast guards were searching the mouth of the Moruca River for his body.
Kaieteur News was informed that a vessel owned by the Kumaka District Hospital collided with the 17-foot boat in which the father and son along with a third individual, whose name has been given as “Wood”, were travelling.
The accident occurred around 01:00 hr on Saturday.
The survivor reportedly told the police that he barely noticed when the other boat was almost on top of the vessel he was in and quickly managed to jump overboard. No one from the second vessel was injured.
The 18-year-old was the captain of the vessel and it is suspected that he might have died on the spot since the boat hit him first.
Kaieteur News was told that when his body was pulled from the river, his face was badly damaged. His body is currently at the Charity Funeral Parlour awaiting a Post Mortem examination.
Yesterday, George Piper’s sister, Paula Evans, said that she was informed that the young man went to Charity on Friday to make a purchase.
“He drop off my brother somewhere in the Pomeroon River and when he was going home back he stop to pick him up,” the woman noted.
She further explained that they have a lot of relatives living in the area and suspected that the young man and his father stayed back to chat a bit.
A little after 12:15 hrs on Saturday, they left for home. The accident occurred shortly after 01:00 hrs.
Evans, who resides in the city said that both her nephew and brother are good swimmers but assumed that because they were struck by the other boat, they might have been unable to help themselves.
