STANDARDS IN FOCUS…GNBS – Maintaining measurements for transport

Yesterday, May 20, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) joined other National Metrology Institutions around the world to commemorate World Metrology Day under the theme “Measurements for Transport”.
Whether air, land or water related, it is a fact that the transport sector in Guyana has generally maintained the requisite systems to ensure that measuring devices in use are consistently accurate and reliable. The sector has relied on GNBS over the years to execute its mandate that ensures all devices used for the purpose of trade are verified (stamped).
Nevertheless, as in the retail sector (markets, shops, supermarkets, etc.), consumers or those who rely on measurements to make their payments in the transport sector have a meaningful role to play which would guarantee that they are not overcharged or given inaccurate weights. The GNBS advocates that the following roles must be fulfilled by those who rely on the measurement system in the transport sector so they are given their monies worth:
1. Conduct business with those who are using verified scales and other verified devices. If used properly, approved devices give correct weights or measures.
2. Look for GNBS verification seals on devices. The affixed GNBS seals are one way of determining whether the device (scale) was verified.
3. Make sure the device used to weigh or measure your goods is clean and tidy. Dirty devices often give inaccurate weights and measures and can cause the contamination of goods.
4. Make sure that you can see the measuring indicator of scales. Ensure that the scale is positioned in a manner which will allow you to see the weighing process.
5. Query if you have doubts about your weight or measure.
6. Buy in metric quantities. Devices in use are generally in metric units and by requesting goods and services in metric quantities you are assured of your weights and measures.
7. Call the GNBS hotline or visit the Weights and Measures office in your Region and make your complaints if the need arises.
The GNBS will continue to strengthen its efforts in ensuring devices used in all sectors are accurate and reliable through routine verification and surveillance activities. By doing this, the integrity of the national system of measurement will be maintained.
