(Kaieteur News) – Two young men were on Saturday arrested by police for an alleged robbery under arms committed on a shopkeeper at Unity, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
According to a police report the incident occurred around 12:05hrs.
Reports are that the 32-year-old shopkeeper was in her shop when two suspects, aged 20 and 21 of Cummings Lodge and Sophia respectively, approached her and demanded money. The men then reportedly began searching through drawers and other areas of the shop for cash.
The woman reportedly ran from the shop, during which the suspects discharged a round in her direction. She subsequently fainted and was taken to a hospital by persons in the area, police disclosed.
“The suspects then attempted to flee; however, they were pursued by persons in the area along with police ranks. During the pursuit, they reportedly collided with a motor car and were apprehended by ranks,” the police reported.
This newspaper learned that a firearm and motorcycle were recovered, and both suspects were taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital where they are receiving treatment for multiple injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
