Days before they killed bread vendor, Andre Alexander, three man stood on a bridge in Sophia and plotted how they would rob their victim.
Their intended loot was the gold rings that the bread vendor wore.
The alleged plot was revealed to police, following the arrest on Wednesday of a 23-year-old ‘D’ Field, Sophia labourer, who police believe was the individual who shot and killed Alexander on May 5.
He is believed to have been in the company of ex-solder Shaquille Grant, and another man who is still at large. Grant has since been charged with Alexander’s murder.
The man who is still at large is believed to be the owner of the motorcycle on which two of the killers fled.
A source close to the investigation said that while the suspect has admitted to being among the individuals who robbed Alexander, he has denied shooting the vendor.
Kaieteur News understands that the detained man told investigators that a few days prior to the killing, he and two others stood on “Gully Bridge” to plan the robbery.
He claimed that one of the men told him that Alexander wore two gold rings.
He alleged that on the night of the robbery, he observed one of his associates struggling with Alexander before shooting him. The men fled with cash and loaves of bread, but did not get the rings.
Alexander died during surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Hospital staff later handed over the rings to the slain man’s relatives.
A police release had stated that Alexander was at his bread stand, located at Lot 394 ‘C’ Field Sophia, when two men rode up on a motorcycle.
The pillion rider requested three loaves of bread and paid with a $5000 note.
It was reported that while Alexander was in the process of making change, the ‘customer’ whipped out a gun and demanded cash.
When Alexander put up a fight, the robber discharged two rounds, one of which struck the vendor in the stomach.
The two men relieved their victim of his cash and also escaped with three loaves of bread.
