Fifteen year-old Amy Grant started this year with a bang by claiming five gold medals at the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Republic Anniversary Long Course Meet which was held at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal in March.
The multi talented Grant took the 1500m and 800m freestyle on Day One and Day Two of the competition. She followed by claiming 100m freestyle on Day Three with a personal best time. On Day Four and final day of the competition, Grant swam away with the 50m freestyle in a personal best time in the first event of the day’s programme.
Grant followed up two events later by taking the 50m butterfly in National record time in the Girls 15-17 category. The competition was used as the 2017 Carifta Trials as well as for selection of 2017 Goodwill squad, for the Goodwill Championships which will be hosted in Guyana later this year.
Grant had entered the ASSAT International Invitational in Trinidad and Tobago in December 2016 as an “Unattached” swimmer and would have been swimming Unattached since the start of the 2017 season in Guyana since she was transitioning from her former club to another club.
She had met all of her financial obligations to her former club and was awaiting her release documents which had been promised for the New Year by Silver Sharks Aquatic Swim Club’s President.
Grant has not only moved from her former swim club Silver Sharks, she has also moved from The Bishops’ High School back to St Roses High School to complete her CSEC examinations and has expressed delight with both moves as she is getting the needed support in both her academic and sporting careers.
Having been given support by the Dorado Speed Swim Club members in her times of challenge in swimming, Grant was welcomed warmly by the Dorado family and Head Coach Stephanie Fraser.
Fraser, one of the leading coaches in the business with loads of experience and certification at the highest level, has expressed on behalf of her club, the hope that the young and talented Grant can continue to improve and reach new heights in the sport with her new “Club Family” which will be there to lend support and encouragement, every step of the way.
