Games team will also benefit from full scholarships to attend the University of Guyana.
Director of Sport, Christopher Jones made the announcement Friday night at the National Sports Commission (NSC) Award Ceremony and Dinner at the Pegasus Hotel. The announcement came in the midst of his remarks to an audience of Ministers of Government, Government Officials, members of the diplomatic community, athletes and representative of sport associations. Such an initiative had never been undertaken before for local athletes.
“At this time, I wish to acknowledge and welcome team Guyana, who would have performed outstandingly at the CARIFTA Games in Curacao. As a result of their academic and sport achievements, there will be incentives in recognition of same as an encouragement,” Jones had said before the historic announcement.
And why not? After all it has been a historic week for the CARIFTA team. Compton Caesar became the first Guyanese sprinter to win a 100m gold medal at the Games. He also had a 200m bronze medal for two of the eight medals Guyana brought home.
In all, Guyana collected four gold, one silver and three bronze medals from Natricia Hooper, Chantoba Bright, Anfernee Headecker, Claudrice McKoy and Caesar. Guyana sent 12 athletes to the Games. Each of the 12 athletes will benefit from the scholarships.
“I now ask team Guyana to stand. Because of your demonstrated dedication and achievements, the National Sports Commission has provided full scholarships to all of you to attend the University of Guyana,” the Director of Sport announced to rapturous applause from the packed Savannah Suite.
Following their arrival in Guyana, motorcade and presentation of memorabilia from President David Granger at State House, the CARIFTA team had been guests of the Pegasus Hotel where they stayed until yesterday.
Jones also announced that all winners from the Ceremony would be guests of Arrowpoint Resort for one day. The largesse for local athletes is a positive shift in sports culture and recognition for Guyanese athletes.
