Dear Editor,
As we observe Earth Day April 22, 2017 (today), it is abundantly clear that the problem of human-caused climate change is real, frightening, urgent, and that this challenge poses significant risks to our ability to sustainably develop and create a better future, to national security, food security, public health, the wellbeing of local communities and the linkages among eco and other systems on our planet.
Indeed, studies of changes in temperature and sea level over the last millennium show that the climate system has tipping points. Also, research in this field continues to show that warming of the planet really increases the risk of going beyond climatic points of no return, possibly trigging large scale ocean circulation changes, the loss of ice areas and the reduction of various species.
Governments, corporate and other leaders must do more, much more, to raise public awareness and to promote environment and climate literacy in our global and local societies. Perhaps, one way by which corporations can assist is by using wrappings and packaging materials of the products as media to disseminate environmental messages. This could go a far way not only to raise awareness but also to empower consumers and other citizens to take responsibility for the health and safety of the environment.
It is important too, that governments enforce compliance with environmental laws and regulations, particularly, in the extractive sector of our economy in circumstances, where our global village is experiencing greater levels of pollution in our seas, rivers and oceans. Again, governments around the world are obligated to provide national security of which securing the integrity of the natural environment is a major aspect of this responsibility. There could be no real national security without good environmental governance. Earth Day therefore presents a good opportunity for us, humans, to reflect and focus on advancing the interests of this planet.
