Georgetown: The Golden Jaguars have urged football fans to come out in numbers to support the national team in the international match against Martinique tomorrow in Linden.
A 30-man Guyana Senior Men’s National Squad is preparing for the clash with a series of intense tactical and technical training sessions, under the careful guidance of Interim Head Coach
Wayne Dover, and new Assistant Coach and former national team captain Charles Pollard.
“The 12th man is always important and the fans – you are that 12th man, and we are looking for your support as much as possible,” said attacker Vurlon Mills. “Come out in your yellow, come out roaring for the Golden Jaguars, come and represent. We will make you proud come Tuesday.”
The match is the first senior international fixture of 2017, and the first in Linden since 2011. It is part of the Guyana Football Federation’s plans to ensure the Jaguars play in every FIFA international window in the calendar year to develop the team more effectively for regional competitions.
“For me and the rest of our teammates, we are looking to put in a good performance, so that we can give the fans something to cheer about,” said winger Trayon Bobb. “I am begging the fans to come out and please support us.”
As a part of France, Martinique’s national team is supported and funded by the might of the
French Football Federation, and features players from top leagues in Europe.
The match is part of Martinique’s warm-up for their fifth CONCACAF Gold Cup appearance later this year.
“They are going to be tough – Martinique has a good team,” said Mills. “They have brought in a lot of players who play in Europe, so it’s going to be tough game for us. They just came off of a win against Trinidad. They are coming to us with confidence. We have to show the same level of confidence and intensity and try to bring away a win.”
Several young players such as 16-year-old Milerock FC goalkeeper Jonathan Copeland and 18-year-old GFC midfielder Curtez Kellman have been included in the provisional squad to further their development.
“We have a lot of young players – it’s good they are part of something like this to get the exposure,” said Bobb. “It’s a good opportunity for them so they can showcase their skills and talent.”
The match against Martinique kicks off at 8:00pm tomorrow at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in Linden. Admission is $1500, and fans are being asked to wear yellow to show their support for the team.
