Police have captured the elusive Shamar Mohamed called “Crab Man,” who went into hiding after allegedly chopping his former girlfriend and her mother on Christmas Eve night.
An official said that Mohamed was nabbed late yesterday evening after coming out of the Canjie Creek, Corentyne backdam where he had fled on Wednesday to elude police.
Police believe that Mohamed got lost in the bushy and swampy area. They reportedly contacted an individual who guided the suspect out of the backlands and took him to a taxi, where the ranks were waiting.
On Wednesday, police, acting on information, journeyed some 45 miles up the Canje River and eventually came upon a camp in which Mohamed was hiding.
But Mohamed fled before the police could close in on him.
Police took the owner of the camp and four of his workmen into custody.
It was on Christmas Eve that Mohamed had allegedly launched a brazen attack on his 23-year-old former girlfriend, Bhartie Udho, and her mother, Amika.
The women were severely chopped about the body after the suspect reportedly went berserk with a machete. He allegedly severed Bhartie Udho’s left arm, and chopped her mother to the forehead and chest.
The relatives had just left their number 70 Village home for a Christmas Eve outing in the town of Corriverton when the incident took place.
The victims were rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Kaieteur News has learnt that Bhartie Udho had secured a restraining order against the suspect, with whom she started a relationship some five years ago.
Mohamed had allegedly forcibly taken Udho from her home on four occasions; twice in 2012, once in 2013 and 2015.
The suspect has also been accused of breaking and entering the family home in an effort to abduct his former girlfriend.
The former teacher was forced to quit her job after being repeatedly stalked.
