A 27-year-old Guyanese mother is begging to be reunited with her three Trinidadian children after she was refused entry into the country twice in 2016.
Shaneza Sampson, of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice moved to Trinidad when she was 18 years old in search of a better life, it was there that she met her husband and gave birth to their three children. However, the relationship came to an end after she alleges her husband had an affair.
During the initial stage of their separation, her husband was given custody of their two eldest children, aged seven and five, while she was given custody of their two-week-old baby.
Eventually, Sampson’s husband gave her the other two children. However, she started encountering financial difficulties and decided to return home with her youngest child to get back on her feet in 2015. Her decision was also based on the fact that her husband stopped the processing of her residency papers.
Later in 2015 she was allowed entry into the country to see her children and for her custody hearing, but all that changed in 2016 when she tried to re-enter the country twice but was told she couldn’t because she had previously overstayed.
Sampson contends that the reason given by the immigration officers made no sense since her children are in that country and she was never denied entry before. She believes her estranged husband who is a police officer in the country is behind her immigration woes.
The court system in Trinidad is also in favour of her estranged husband who is a national of the country and he continues to wield his influence unfairly in the system there, she alleges.
The distraught mother said she sought help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was initially given advice but after a while she could not reach officials who became evasive.
The young mother is worried about the well-being of her children who are all girls. She is calling on those in authority to help her gain access to her young children.
