As part of efforts to support the socio-economic development of youths in Guyana, the Caribbean and United States, the Guyana United Youth Development Association, (GUYDA), a New-York based charitable organisation has
presented, Abenna Andrews with a Lenovo laptop and complete printer system.
Abenna is the daughter of former Kaieteur News journalist, the late Dale Andrews.
The items were presented to the teenager at the Kaieteur News, Saffon Street Charlestown head office, last week. Secretary of the organisation, Beryl James handed over the items.
Andrews, 15, a student of Annandale Secondary School, thanked James and the organisation for the laptop and printer, which she said would be beneficial in her studies. She said that she learnt of the organisation after she visited the US earlier this year, as part of the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) Buxton Steel Pan Orchestra.
The Orchestra was invited to perform in New York for the overseas celebration of Guyana‘s 50th Independence Anniversary.
“I approached Ms Beryl James and asked about the organisation and how I could benefit and she told me to send a request via email and I did,” Andrews explained.
She said that the new equipment will certainly assist her with her research for school and in completing assignments.
According to James, GUYDA is a 501 C3 Not-for-Profit based in Frisco Avenue, Far Rockaway New York, which comprises overseas-based Guyanese and other donors, whose sole mission is to assist young people with achieving their goals academically, socially and physically.
The organisation, which was established over a decade ago, has since donated sport gear, books and other school items to thousands of Guyanese, Caribbean, and other U.S- based students.
“We also assist young people from the U.S. Once there is a need, we are there to assist,” the GUYDA representative added.
James said that GUYDA has also awarded scholarships and assisted students with their tuition fees.
Additionally, each year the group hosts two grand activities to show appreciation to donors and sponsors of the various projects; a Father’s Day programme and a Grand Presentation Ball in June.
