Popular disc jockey Wavel Sheik Sabsook was killed early yesterday morning when the car he was travelling in crashed and overturned on the East Bank Demerara Public Road, near the Distribution Services Limited (DSL).
The vehicle, bearing registration number PVV 2009, only came to a stop after it crashed into DSL’s fence, broke a sign board and then burst into flames.
Sabsook, also called “Javid” and “DJ Bashment” of Grove, East Bank Demerara was hurled out of the vehicle onto the opposite side of the roadway.
The father of one was pronounced dead at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital.
The driver, Shameer, who was the only other occupant, managed to get out of the car before it exploded.
He was taken into custody after being treated at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital for minor burns to his hands.
A police official said that a breathalyzer test revealed that the driver’s alcohol level was 103 microgrammes, which is way above the prescribed limit of 35 microgrammes.
The DJ and his friend were returning home from a party in Georgetown when the accident occurred.
The driver, according to police sources, claimed that a car swerved in front of him, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. He said that because the road was wet, his vehicle skidded and toppled before it exploded.
However, traffic ranks who reviewed surveillance footage from cameras in close proximity to the scene observed no other car on the road at the time of the accident.
Persons on the scene said that it was obvious that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, a cousin of Sabsook’s said that when he was informed of the accident, he went to the scene but police had already taken Sabsook’s remains to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
He said that a doctor at the medical institution informed him that both of the DJ’s feet were broken, one of his hands was broken and there was a gash on his head.
A post mortem examination which will be done today will reveal the extent of Sabsook’s injuries.
Traffic Chief, Dion Moore in an invited comment yesterday confirmed that the driver’s alcohol level was above the legal limit.
Kaieteur News understands that speeding and drunk driving continues to be the main factors in traffic accidents.
Moore reminded drivers that it is with the five ‘Cs’- Care, Commonsense, Consideration, Courtesy and Caution that a person moves from point A to point B safely.
